Lutheran Church of the Resurrection raises $2,500 for Flint water crisis

RACINE, Wis. – Lutheran Church of the Resurrection (LCR), 322 Ohio Street, recently raised $2,500 from its congregation to benefit sister congregation (and fellow ELCA church) Salem Lutheran Church in Flint, Mich. to help that church’s efforts to raise funds to have a water filtration system put into their parish building. The system would then be open to everyone in the community who needs clean water.

LCR Pastor Dr. Arthur Bergren said the idea to help the people of the Flint parish came after an LCR member, John Mantey, approached him asking how LCR could help the Michigan community deal with their water management crisis that has made water undrinkable due to excess lead.

Pastor Bergren said he contacted Rev. Dr. Don Kreiss, Bishop of the Southwest Michigan Synod, who alerted him to the efforts of the Salem Lutheran Church congregation. Added Pastor Bergren: “It is my hope that other parishes will follow our example… that is why I have been public with (this) fundraising on social media.”

Anyone interested in financially supporting this cause can contact Bishop Kreiss at the Southwest Michigan Synod, 8115 E. Jefferson Ave., Detroit, MI 48214.
